I'm with you - save it for the bathroom
but how do you feel about knitting? I was asked to stop knitting (a tiny little sock on very quite bamboo needles) at a conference recently - I was well back in the audience and the speaker couldn't see me - and I can knit and listen - but - no - the people around me were furious. I go to the wrong conferences obviously
katie- i wonder about knitting sometimes. i personally don't knit in a venue where there is a speaker because it sort of seems like you have something better to do--or that you are really not listening. although we can rationalize it by saying it is a quiet endeavor, maybe the folks around you were distracted by the movement of your hands. i would knit and i do, on the train to work, at a free public concert that is "bring your own chairs"--that sort of thing.
but, yucko on the grooming. how about the men with the black plastic comb in their pockets who whip it out and comb 2 pieces of really long hair- gag me!
Personal care stuff should be done in the bathroom. I have a co-worker at the library who comes to work and always brushes her hair in the staff lunchroom - what the hell? I am eating! Knitting would not be a problem! Terry
Nail clipping no no no... when i rode the L in Chicago. I remember someone one time clipping their finger nails... YUCKY... that bugged me. I remember twitching evertime I heard the little noise and then where did the nail piece go? Hopefully not in my hair...
No to nail clipping. I if you are at an event where someone is speaking you really should be listening!!!

Double yucko on grooming in public. And nail clipping would be about at the top of my list. Maybe I am just an old stick in the mud, but I don't feel work of any sort should be done in a professional venue with a speaker. Everyone should equally suffer together.
