happy belated valentine's day. i made this heart thing at about 5 pm last night pretty much after it was all over but the crying. i was thinking of giving it to the bf, but he was so taken with the pikachu toothbrush that i decided that this would be like the ultimate xmas let down.

the world is a better place because of my friend colleen. i know she will laugh and roll her eyes up in her head, but trust me, it is true. she is fun, smart, faithful, and sincere. she cares about kids. she is insightful and honest. she is athletic (which i envy more than i can say). she is the best friend and just an all around wonderful person. she has put up with my ranting and raving for about 14 years. no small feat. we walk together almost every sunday and have been attempting to solve the problems of the world in that time- no luck yet, but with a little bit of luck, there will be 50 more years for us to try and get to the bottom of all of this. colleen is the kind of person that kind of makes you pinch yourself and realize that without friends our lives would be...well, you know. so, happy birthday colleen. i am going to finish this tag in a few minutes so that jerry can deliver your present. oh yeah, and congratulations on the best gift of all-your fab new job! love, becky

actually, this isn't the only notable thing that has happened since May, but close to...
so, on friday with a sick kid in the bed at home (all 4 wisdom pulled hours earlier) I trotted off to the DMV to get my new (ugly, wondering who the heck designed this one) MO license plates. i decided that if the line was too long, i would just leave. well, now comes the blogworthy part- there was a dmv employee at the counter with no one in her line. you got it, i walked right up- first in line. not only that, but the worker was pleasant. i had my plates in 3 minutes. def under 5. i could have kissed that dmv employee and i told her so.
i would have posted a picture of a tag i just made, but now that i have decided to get back to this, the scanner is misbehaving.

when i stopped writing about a month ago, i actually had 2 people ask what had happened to me. i know, everyone thinks they are busy. i usually am not. but this month, i've been busy at work and thus too whipped to show off all the fabulousness i've been up to. here it is in a nutshell. shawnie turned 5! i went to like the 2nd baby shower of my life-you know, jews think all that preplanning and pre-gifting is bad luck. anyway, i made a layette, hooded towel, burp pad, hats, and a bib out of my new fave, cheap yarn, cotton-ease. and i got published in take ten. honestly, i can count on one hand all the times i have ever been published. once in 8th grade, once in the editorial section of the post and once in the wk times. that was my crowning glory. an entire letter full of me ranting and raving about the fact that they took the stop sign down at the cross walk across from the library. i heart small town life. anyway, i was so excited, i didn't even care that they spelled my name wrong.

ok, so the yarn i bought to make the pi shawl was as skinny as thread. then i tried to knit with metal double points, size six. i whined, i tried, i actually broke out into a sweat and then well, you know, i went and got the $60 dollar yarn that i really wanted off the shelf and went to town. it's actually a fun project after you get done alienating everyone at the table and acting a little like kids act when they get hungry or over tired. as i said, unless you are heidi, do not try this at home.

this is what it has come to in jewish xmasville. a nine inch plug in tree. don't get me wrong; i gave it my best shot this year. got the very last tree at the boyscout lot. and all that dry deadness for a mere $40. brought it home, chopped off another foot and put it in the tree stand. put three ornaments on it and my home made out of a cheesy xmas tablecloth tree skirt (thanks h)
that night the cat dumped it over (thanks ted) and i hauled it outside where it still sits, tree stand, three ornaments and all. i'm tellin' ya sibyl and rose were right. jews were not meant to celebrate christmas. on to the next. i'm busy making valentines today.

i think my first brush with aging in earnest came about 15 years ago when i innocently asked one of my co-workers if he remembered where he was when kennedy was shot (4th grade, taking a spelling test) to which he replied, "i wasn't born yet." ahhh...i'm not hung up about aging; you can know how old i am- 52, practically 53 and there are some things about it that are actually good-like i sorta don't care what anyone thinks of me and some other stuff that for the moment has escaped me. thankfully, i am in a field where i would definitely know if i was catching it (alzheimer's) so even these frequent, momentary lapses don't bother me. in fact, here are some things i honestly forgot to post. 1) i watched version one and version two of the imitation of life and i think y'all should too. it is great! seriously fab fashion in the lana turner version. 2) our chanukah party from this year. amazing how you can get grown adults to put these party hats on. anyway it was fun and oily. just as it shoulda been.
but back to aging and never mind any of the above-the most startling aspect to date is the demise of the eyebrows. seriously, it is serious. i noticed the other day, and trust me i don't look at any part of myself very often, that there is one spot on the right one that is flat gone! so, i now have this.
if you have anything that you use in this department that is tried and true, let me know. and finally, what's a nice jewish girl doing with all this christmas stuff. honestly, i didn't even make a dent in it this year. i'm thinking "christmas in july."

I bet you 4 or five regulars are thinking that my entire week has been just one big boring blur since the pickins have been slim in the new post department. Not so!! This week I finally bought a brush. Honestly, I haven't had one in probably 10-15 years. With short hair, who needs it? And unbeknownst to me when i picked this dandy out, it has a gel handle! Can you imagine? Another highlight was buying this Libman's mop which is the absolute best mop I have ever used. I swear, the floor feels different just from using this thing. Oh yeah and these ATCs are the best yet. To think I almost didn't participate. Thanks for hosting Red Lead.

this roving creeps me out so bad (even the word creeps me out) that i could not even artfully arrange this photo, obv...in spite of this fact, i got the itch to just give this needle felting a little try and this entire package of multi-colored ickiness was 30% off at hancock fabrics, so i decided- ah what the heck. (touching this stuff could be like facing my fear of roller coasters or making it thru an mri of my brain, only way easier.) hancock fabrics is another ick of the ickiness equation here. that place is a pit! i swear they may have had a merchandising or display person in their employ at some point in time, but i think he/she was canned back in the 70s. not only is it dirtier than dirty in there but it just keeps getting worse and worse and worse as one wends their way to the back of the store. by the time one gets to the yarn/ribbon "department" it looks like someone took the stock and just heaved it in a general direction. you know how you just sort of know when you have gone to a place for the last time?

after one has lived say, 52 years or so, they start to notice a pattern- like the minute you get 20 extra bucks and you think you may be able to go to red lead and just blow it, something comes up instantly. so let's see, this month, with my little paycheck from my little p/t job i get to pay to have a dead tree chopped down and oh yeah did i mention that yesterday i had a flat tire? the tire had only 7 (that's right, 7) nails in it, so i got to buy 2 new tires as well. and lisa, just so you know, i got the black.

but there are certain things that jews do and certain things that they don't do- for example- with the exception of sandy koufax, jews do not play professional sports and as a rule, jewish men cannot fix anything- cars, household stuff--none of that. jews don't ride motorcycles or paint other people's toenails...you get the picture. so the fact that my father sold motorcycles and midas mufflers for a living- well this makes him, you know... a total anomaly. my grandmother could never wrap her brain around that. even tho he made a good living she would always say, "paul is at the office." i can tell you, paul was at the shop, with the other motorcycle dudes. both of my brothers ride motorcycles too...oy! and jon, pictured here, is a carpenter. like that is his living- not his hobby. what a bunch of jewish nutskis!
i, on the other hand, get a tad claustro with a helmet on and unfortunately have these miniature legs so I couldn't balance the bike anyway- i have chosen more jewish pursuits like helping people and making stuff. so there you go, now you know.

so, i'm running late this morning but i decide to go on the metro anyway. due to the i-40 construction and the fact that gas is about $15.00 a gallon, lots of people use metrolink now. it is quite crowded. so crowded in fact that your lunch bag and tote may not even have the luxury of having their own personal seat. my first seat mate is a young well-groomed guy who gets up and nabs the first unoccupied bench. you know how when you fly, there is always that person who you see at your gate and you instantly say to yourself, "please g-d don't let that be the person i sit next to." of course, i glance out the window and there is that dude, waiting to board the train...need i say more? in a flash, he is next to me, talking to himself, reading the wall street journal and inching closer and closer and closer... i wasn't officially panicking but suffice it to say, i could not wait to get off! so, at the next tunnel, i think to myself, "great, i get off after the tunnel..." (not necessarily this particular tunnel but by now i am on a mission to GET OFF). i hear the conductor say "forest park" which btw is not my stop and i look out the window where it does not look like my stop. nonetheless, i always get off after the tunnel, so i hopped (yes jerry, i hopped) up and ran off the train...at the wrong stop. so yada, yada, yada...i was only 15 minutes late for work.

still having a bit of a time loving the crochet...but it is pleasantly retro, good colors...i just can't stop thinking about harvest gold, avocado and orange every time i look at this thing...nevertheless! i have it all packed in my new fab bag and we're ready to go- no word yet on the outcome of the jazz tryouts...have a great long weekend y'all.
